map making
This is a fun way to learn about events local or far away. You don't need expensive equipment but like any hobby it helps a little to buy good quality stationery. I use freehand since the maps are not used for navigational purposes but there is nothing stopping you tracing out an existing map before making it your own.
The technique I prefer is that used by T.E. Lawrence who created maps for the British Government in the early years of the 20th century. They consist of simple pen drawn outlines on white paper which are then lightly painted either side with a light yellow/sand colour. For water he used a pale blue with darker blue along the coastline of his maps. Sometimes Lawrence filled in the maps with a light application of the yellow paint.
I use fountain pens and thin coloured fine liners. For paint any $2 shop paint will do as long as it's water based. You will need paper that doesn't absorb the ink. I have a very large roll of this paper for our use just let me know if you need it.
My tube of yellow/sandy paint had a crack in it and when I went to use it it had completely dried out. You can still use dry paints though.
Lawrence drew up a lot of maps of the middle east because that was his place of interest. He travelled the region sketching ancient ruins, castles and fortifications. I also was interested in the region but now I would like to move closer to home and the Pacific Ocean is my next target.
