PRACTICE ASSESSMENT
Introduction
The students in Springfield’s Schools sports teams are organising a party.
This assessment activity requires you to calculate what it will cost each student and investigate the
impact of the variation in the subsidy provided by the school will have on this cost.
Use the following information to find out how much it will cost the students to attend the party, and
the impact the school subsidy will have on this cost
In the solution of this problem you should:
- Show calculations, as appropriate, that you have used in the solution of the problem;
- Use mathematical statements;
- Explain what you are calculating at each stage of the solution.
The quality of your discussion and reasoning and how well you link this to the context will determine the
overall grade.

Task
The party is for 250 people. The students in the sports teams will need to buy bread. They know that 1
loaf of bread will feed 10 people. Bread costs $2.50 including GST (15%) per loaf.
They need to buy 40 kilograms of sausages. They need to buy vegetarian and meat sausages in the ratio of 3:5
Vegetarian sausages cost $2 per kilogram and meat sausages cost $3 per kilogram.
These prices include GST (15%). The butcher will discount both type of sausages by 10%.
They will need to buy tomato sauce. They know that 1 bottle of sauce will feed 15 people.
Tomato sauce usually costs $2.80 (including GST) per bottle.
The local dairy has offered to supply these at a price that excludes GST (15%).
The school have offered to pay 14% of the total cost of the food and the parents will also pay 1/5
of the total cost.
MERIT (to complete the section)
There are 90 students in the sports teams and they will share equally the remaining cost.
Calculate how much each student wll have to pay in order to just cover the cost.
EXCELLENCE:
The school are not certain they will able to pay exactly 14% but will commit to an amount in the range of 13% to 16%. Investigate how this could impact on the amount students may have to pay.
the whole picture
The total cost of the party is divided among the 90 students. Use this to guide you.

example answers
what do I need for the Achieved grade?
(At least ‘three’ different types of numeric
methods need to be used in solving problems)
Using decimals:
e.g. 25 × $2.50 = $62.50
Using ratios:
eg. Veg Sausages : Meat Sausages = 15 : 25
Calculating less GST
eg. $47.60 ÷1.15 = $41.39
Using fractions:
eg. 1/5 × $198.40 =$39.68
Using percentages
eg. 14% of $198.40 = $27.78
Solutions do not have to be given in context
(incorrect rounding will not be penalised)

What Do I Need For The merit Grade?
Total cost of food
Bread: $62.50
Sausages: 90% of $105 = $94.50
Sauce: 17 ×$2.80 = $47.60 less GST = $41.39

What Do I Need For The excellence Grade?
Cost per student with school subsidy of 14%
School’s subsidy could range from 13% of
$198.40 to 16% of $198.40
ie each student from $1.41 to $1.47/$1.48
This means that the different possible school
subsidy has little effect on the amount each
student will need to pay.
