get lost in canada
Introduction
Jack and Greta are planning to travel to Canada for a holiday. They plan to be in Canada for two months (Jun and July) and during that time take a three week bus tour through Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia.
This activity require you to calculate the maximum amount of money they will need to save for their trip and how long it will take them to save for it.
Show your calculations using correct mathematical statements. Clearly communicate your strategy and method at each stage of the solution. At a higher level consider what factors might affect the time to save.
Task
Use the following information to find out how much money Jack and Greta will need to save each week. Jack and Greta estimate that for each day they are in Canada between them they will need on average NZ$240 (to the nearest $30)

Task
Use the following information to find out how much money Jack and Greta will need to save each week. Jack and Greta estimate that for each day they are in Canada between them they will need on average NZ$240 (to the nearest $30)
- Jack earns $1100 each week. Greta earns $883 each week. Jack is able to save one quarter of his income and Greta 42% of her income to put towards the trip.
- The cost for the return air tickets is $2250 each, including GST. There is a credit surcharge of 1.5% added to the cost of the tickets.
- The cost of travel insurance is NZ$375 plus GST (15%) for both of them.
- The three week bus trip costs $2280 Canadian Dollars per person. The Exchange rate is: 1 NZ Dollar = 0.9 Canadian dollars
Jack's savings: 1/4 x 1100 = $275
Greta's savings: 0.42 x 883 = $370.86
Total savings: 275+370.86=$645.86
Greta's savings: 0.42 x 883 = $370.86
Total savings: 275+370.86=$645.86
Air tickets: 2250 x 2 x 1.015 = $4567.5
Insurance: 375 x 1.15 = $431.25
Bus Trip: 2280x2/0.9=$5066.67
Allowance: 40x240=$9600
Daily Allowance:
For maximum amount they go over Christmas holiday period
June July, this gives 61 days max they can save for.
Take off 21 days for the bus trip
61-21=40days 40 x 240=$9600
Time to save = Total costs/total savings
Total costs: 4567.5+9600+5066.67+431.25=$19665.42
Time to save = 19665.42/645.86= 30.45
It will take them about 31 whole weeks to save for their trip.
