Increasing by a percentage
For example, Wiramu creates greenstone jewellery, selling his pieces for $80. After 12 months he decides to increase their selling price by 12%. How much should he charge?
'Raw' greenstone from the Greenstone Factory in Hokitika
Multiplying the 12 by 80 will give you 960. Then dividing by 100 gives $9.60 which you can add to the original $80 to get $89.60
The 10% RULE
Another method is using the 10% rule. 12% is made of 10% and 2%. 10% of 80 is $8 and 2% of $80 is $1.60 which gives $9.60. So the new price is $80 + $9.60 = $89.60
The 'All in One Go Method'
This method gives the answer straight up. Turn the percentage increase into a decimal and add 1 to it. So 12% becomes 0.12 and plus 1 gives 1.12 Now multiply 80 by 1.12, which gives $89.60 wow! Try this method when you are confident with the one of the other methods.
