FABRIC BAY
PILLOW/CUSHION PROJECT
A pillow is made up of two main parts, a cover and an insert. A more decorative pillow might have a trim or flange. A pillow might also use buttons, zips or Velcro to secure the insert. Inserts may be made from polyester or foam for cheaper pillows and feather or duck down in expensive ones.
The following pillow/cushion was designed by taking dimensions from an original European pillow case measuring 65cm x 65cm. Cutting the fabric true and square was done with the help of a set square and steel ruler from the woodwork shop. I tried to trace around the original pillow case but its sides were uneven.
I had some difficulty with the machining of the thicker parts of the fabric and reverse stitching. I found that doing those parts by winding the machine manually worked out fine. I got the turtle while I was on a military exercise with the RNZAF in the Solomon islands in 1993. Hope you like it.
