PROBABILITY 6
HOUSE OF CARDS
PROBLEM
You have been given some playing cards. Study the selection of cards in your pack. Think about the probability of the different combinations of cards that you could get. Write out your investigative question based on the cards in your pack. For this activity you must select 3 cards at random from a pack of cards.
PLAN
Plan an experiment to answer your question, and write down your procedure. Your experimental procedure must:
- discuss and define the set of possible outcomes;
- identify the number of trials;
- identify how you will record your results;
- be sufficient to answer your investigative question.
Your investigative question and experimental procedure need to be approved by your teacher before beginning the activity.
DATA
Carry out your experiment and record your data in a suitable format.
Shuffle the cards and place them face down on your desk. You will then randomly select three cards from the pack and record your findings before placing them back in the pack. This is one outcome, you must repeat this a reasonable amount of times.

ANALYSIS
Analyse your data and present your findings:
- Draw at least two appropriate displays to show the data
- Calculate appropriate summary statistics and/or probabilities (Frequency table)
- Describe features of your data and any trends or patterns in the experimental distribution, for example, shape, unusual or interesting features.
- Discuss your data, displays and statistics in the context of your investigation
CONCLUSION
Write a conclusion that summarises your findings and answers your question.
